How is Animal Agriculture (Meat, Eggs, Dairy) the Leading Cause of Climate Change, Environmental Destruction, Mass Extinction and Poverty?

  • 82% of starving children live in countries where food is fed to animals, and the animals are eaten by western countries.

  • Animal Agriculture (AG) is responsible for 91% of Amazon destruction.

  • 1,100 Land activists have been killed in Brazil in the past 20 years.

  • AG is responsible for:

    • 20% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from ALL transportation.

    • 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions (32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide, CO2 per year).

    • 80% of all ammonia emissions in the U.S. Source EPA. Atmospheric ammonia can disrupt aquatic ecosystems, ruin soil quality, damage crops, and jeopardize human health.

  • Emissions for agriculture projected to increase 80% by 2050.

  • 75% of all US agricultural land is used to produce meat and dairy.

  • 50% of the earth’s total land is used for livestock.

  • Land required to feed 1 person for 1 year:

    • Vegan: 1/6th acre

    • Vegetarian: 3x as much as a vegan

    • Meat Eater: 18x as much as a vegan

  • Water required to feed 1 person for 1 day:

    • Vegan: 300 gallon

    • Vegetarian: 1,500 gallon

    • Meat Eater: 4,000 gallon

  • Water required to produce:

    • 1lb of meat: 2,500 gallons

    • 1 gallon of milk: 1,000 gallons

    • 1lb of cheese: 900 gallons

    • 1lb of eggs: 477 gallons

    • 1lb of wheat: 25 gallons

  • 50% of all water used in the USA goes to the production of animals for food.

  • Animal farms pollute our waterways more than all industrial sources combined.

  • Agriculture is responsible for 80-90% of US water consumption.

  • 5% of water consumed in the US is by private homes. 55% of water consumed in the US is for animal agriculture.

  • Not showering for 6 months saves as much water as not eating 1 pound of meat.

  • A person who follows a vegan diet saves 1,100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 sq ft of forested land, 20 lbs CO2 equivalent, and one animal’s life, each day.

  • A person who follows a vegan diet produces the equivalent of 50% less carbon dioxide, uses 1/11th oil, 1/13th water, and 1/18th land compared to a meat-lover for their food.

  • 1 burger equals fuel for 20 miles.

  • Replacing one car with a hybrid saves 1 tonne of CO2.

  • Replacing meat and dairy with vegan food saves 2 tonnes of CO2.

  • Cows produce 150 billion gallons of methane per day

  • Cows and sheep are responsible for 40% of the total methane (23 times as warming as CO2) generated by human activity.

  • Methane is 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year time frame.

  • Methane has a global warming potential 86 times that of CO2 on a 20 year time frame.

  • Livestock is responsible for 65% of all human-related emissions of nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas with 296 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years.

  • 800 Million Acres of US forests have been clear-cut to create land for producing feed for livestock.

  • 70% of the grain produced in the US is fed to farm animals.

  • 80% of all antibiotics produced are administered to farmed animals.

  • 2 billion animals are slaughtered for human consumption each week.

  • 98% of all meat and dairy in the U.S. is factory farmed.

  • Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.

  • 3/4 of the world’s fisheries are exploited or depleted.

  • We could see fishless oceans by 2048.

  • 90-100 million tons of fish are pulled from our oceans each year.

  • As many as 2.7 trillion animals are pulled from the ocean each year.

  • For every 1 pound of fish caught, up to 5 pounds of unintended marine species are caught and discarded as by-kill.

  • As many as 40% (63 billion pounds) of fish caught globally every year are discarded.

  • Scientists estimate as many as 650,000 whales, dolphins and seals are killed every year by fishing vessels.

  • 40-50 million sharks killed in fishing lines and nets.

  • Washington state killed the wedge pack of wolves.

  • Every minute, 7 million pounds of excrement are produced by animals raised for food in the US.

  • A farm with 2,500 dairy cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people.

  • Ten thousand years ago, 99% of biomass (i.e. zoomass) was wild animals. Today, humans and the animals that we raise as food make up 98% of the zoomass.

  • Scientists at the Smithsonian Institution have stated that the equivalent of SEVEN football fields of land is bulldozed every single MINUTE to create more land for farming animals.

  • In the 2004-2005 crop season all the wild animals and trees in over 2.9 million acres of the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil were destroyed in order to grow crops to produce feed for chickens and other factory farmed animals.

  • A United Nations report from 2006 states that animal agriculture is “one of the top two most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” Today in 2016 animal agriculture is THE top contributor.

  • It takes more than 11 times as much fossil fuel to make 1 calorie from animal protein as it does to make 1 calorie from plant protein. It is significantly more than 11 steps if the meat is processed (fast-food, chains, packaged products, hot dogs, burgers, etc). Break down:

    • Grow massive amounts of corn, grain, and soybeans (with all required tilling, irrigation, crop dusters etc.)

    • Transport the grain and soybeans to feed manufacturers on gas-guzzling 18 wheelers

    • Operate the feed mills

    • Transport the feed to the factory farms

    • Operate the factory farms

    • Truck the animals many miles to slaughter

    • Operate the slaughterhouse

    • Transport the meat to processing plants

    • Operate the meat processing plants

    • Transport the meat to grocery stores

    • Keep meat refrigerated or frozen in stores until sold

  • Our planet is facing the largest mass extinction in 65 million years.

  • More studies come out online on alternative and mainstream media each day.

  • Please share the knowledge, compassion and strength to take individual and collective accountability towards making our planet a kinder, non-violent place of peace, compassion, love and freedom. Thank you. <3
