How to Be an Awesome Volunteer at Gratitude Migration
Do you consider yourself a consumer or a producer? A maker or a taker? I know you got your ticket and you’re spending the whole weekend on the beach, but it takes more than a little money and a car to make these events the community-building, transformational experiences that make them special. Making new friends, helping the community, learning new things; there are a million reasons to volunteer to help out while you're there. Do you want to know the people that make Gratitude:Migration possible -- or even be one yourself? To truly be part of the community, help us build this little city together.
While our comp and discount volunteer list is closed, we still have opportunities to become a part of the festival, so you still have the chance to truly BE A PART of something amazing, not just watch it go by.
PARTICIPATE don’t just spectate -- Make this YOUR fest!
There are lots of easy, fun ways to get involved that don’t take a ton of time and are way more fun than trying to find air conditioning. We all create the event with our joint efforts, so it's time to be a participator and not a spectator! Join the hundreds of amazing people that make these events real, make a few new friends and maybe even a name for yourself as being a DOer. Here are a few good ones to try:
Get There Early for Setup
The BEST way to get to know the creators and real DOers of the scene. Volunteer shifts for setup are closed, but if you get an early entry pass (now available online for $50) and want to help out, no one will say no! BRING WORK GLOVES ($2 gardening gloves are fine) and closed-toe shoes, and put in a little sweat equity. It’s mostly holding things vertical, carrying cables, maybe building a dome or using power tools if you’re comfortable with that. Zip-tying up deco, getting rides on golf carts and slaps on the back for being a huge help. If you’re (f)unemployed or able to get out a day early, setup is easily the best way to make sure your fest gets done right. Plus you get the best camping spots, and get to brag “I built this city!” with all the other D-P-Troubleyou rock stars out there. Whiskey and Journey karaoke somewhat inevitable after 10 p.m.
Greet the Migrators!
My personal easy fun favorite festival shift, Greeters are those lovely people that meet you right before the gate and yell “WELCOME HOME!!!” If they’re on their A-game, they’ll pull you out of the car for hugs and spank the virgins (with consent of course). Greeters are the first person you’ll see when you enter the fest, and they are an important part of starting the event off right for each person. Greeters are known for their crazy costumes, generous compliments, and giving a whole lot of high-fives. You’ll meet EVERYONE coming in, from your oldest friends, to your newest enemies (show them who really runs this party!), to that cute girl you’ve had a crush on for years, and you’ll often be showered with gifts from people eager to start the weekend. If you’ve never volunteered before, give yourself the wonderful gift of a greeter shift. It’s the best way to learn how loving this community can be. You’ll thank yourself later.
Help Out With Parking
Essential and fun, parking crew is the most tight-knit group, and also the most relaxed. Chillin with your old friends on a cooler until your new friend rolls through, then guide them to their auto’s home for the weekend. Catch up a bit, call a cart over, and do it again. Enough power to tell people where to go and what to do, and they listen! Flags and walkie-talkies! Look important without hurting yourself! Want to help the fest without busting a nut? Parking is your jam! Sign up for a shift!
Support the Production Team
Have you MET our producers? Would you like to? They’re the amazing people that work themselves to the bone making sure everyone else’s experience is amazing. Be a sweet, friendly, helpful face for a few hours, doing the little, essential things that make the event run smoothly. You might be making sure people stay hydrated, fetching an important person, grabbing an essential cable, or giving a massage. Let us know what you’re good at and we’ll find something important for you to do!
Leave No Trace
I love showing off my fine-ass MOOPer butt (MOOP=Matter Out Of Place if joodonknow)! Show yours off too! Be a part of the LNT crew - Leave No Trace, my friends! We are a collective of dirty monkeys that love dancing in the sunshine, and although we are pretty good at keeping things contained, LNT is an essential part of our practice. That feather that came off your headdress, that wrapper that blew away in the wind, those still have to be removed from the beach before we leave. LNT gets all the love, since they are out in the party showing off their awesome volunteerism, and helping make sure this event doesn’t dirtify the earth. Every single person that walks by you will thank you. Those frolicking fish, those fabulous fledglings, those sweet sea-stars are all wiggling their fins/feathers/flippers in Gratitude for your taking a shift to keep it clean. NO, just cleaning up your tent space is not enough. YES, grab a pair of gloves and a garbage bag from Participation and do YOUR part (not his or hers, YOURS) to leave it better than we found it. Then brag about how many pieces you picked up, and compete to find the coolest ground score!
Stick Around for Breakdown
Destruction is the fun part right? This crew needs YOU do pull those cotter pins and huck stuff back in the truck. Keep our amazing producers from hurting themselves, trying to do it alone. Breakdown is where those that wisely set aside the energy and time to rock get showered with gifts by those who didn’t give out all their vodka/redbull/chocolate/amazing handmade laser-etched snorkels yet (which is always more than you’d think, literally, there’s piles). Someone hurt their hand -- can you help them take down their tent? Someone needs one more pair of hands to bring that dome down safely -- can you be those hands? Breakdown officially lasts until Tuesday night, and we need all the volunteers we can get. NEVER enough, NEVER. If you have any chance of being able to help breakdown, DO IT. You’ll be remembered forever. This community is strong because of all the fun, fabulous, and dedicated people who are here til the end. Can you stay strong with us?
When / How Do I Help?
If you've already signed up for a volunteer shift, then you're good to go. If you've signed up and haven't heard back, make sure you check your Spam box for updates from shiftboard.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. If you're on the beach and down to help, go to the Participation Station (one near Gate or ask at Rangers) and let us know in the morning when you’ll be available to do a short shift. Do it before you get distracted. Remember all those beautiful things you’re seeing, someone put in the effort to make it possible. Be that person for someone else!
Why Do It?
The PEOPLE! The LOVE! The COMMUNITY! The BENNIES! Yes, production always takes care of its volunteers. We are here to make a community together, and as long as you want to be part of our family, we’ll take care of YOU!
It takes a village to make an event like this possible. If you do your part to take care of yourself AND someone else, this amazing community will keep growing and being even more amazing every day. Together, if we each do our little part, we can make sure this is the best event yet. Bring a snack and some to share, minimize moop, create community. Take a deep breath, trust each other, trust in the process, and dive in to this intentional community event. Show up with your gloves, sunscreen, and smile, and we’ll create an amazing weekend together on hELLO Beach!
